    rice paper
  • is not only not made from rice, it is not even, strictly speaking, paper. Rice paper is made from the pith of the Fatsia papyrifera tree. This material is used in Chinese paintings, however, it is never used in traditional Japanese calligraphy.

  • Thin translucent edible paper made from the flattened and dried pith of a shrub, used in painting (esp. oriental) and in baking biscuits and cakes

  • A common misnomer used to describe Oriental papers. There are no papers made from rice, although rice starch was traditionally used to size papers made of Kozo (mulberry plant), Gampi, or Mitsumata.

  • a thin delicate material resembling paper; made from the rice-paper tree

    roll up
  • Denoting something that can be rolled up

  • form into a cylinder by rolling; "Roll up the cloth"

  • get or gather together; "I am accumulating evidence for the man's unfaithfulness to his wife"; "She is amassing a lot of data for her thesis"; "She rolled up a small fortune"

  • Denoting a menu that will display only its title to save screen space

  • arrive in a vehicle: "He rolled up in a black Mercedes"

    blinds
  • Confuse or overawe someone with something difficult to understand

  • A window blind is a type of window covering which is made with slats of fabric, wood, plastic or metal that adjust by rotating from an open position to a closed position by allowing slats to overlap. A roller blind does not have slats but comprises a single piece of material.

  • Cause (someone) to be unable to see, permanently or temporarily

  • window coverings, especially vertical blinds, wood blinds, roller blinds, pleated blinds

  • Deprive (someone) of understanding, judgment, or perception

  • The blinds are forced bets posted by players to the left of the dealer button in flop-style poker games. The number of blinds is usually two, but can be one or three.

A Rice Paper butterfly emerges from its pupa and hangs to dry. I watched as it unfurled itself and allowed its wrinkled wings to straighten and smooth themselves. I found it amazing to watch and marvelled at how a large butterfly such as this could ever fit into the small pupa. The whole process took about 5 minutes but the butterfly hung for another 15 minutes before flying away.
Seen at the "Wings of Paradise" butterfly conservatory in Cambridge, Ontario.
